Peonies are a mainstay in every perennial garden, one of the best cut flowers available, low maintenance once they are established, live forever and are deer proof.
Peonies can be classified by both plant growth habit and flower type. Plant growth types are: herbaceous peonies or Peony lactiflora, Tree peonies or Peony suffruiticosa and Intersectional peonies or Itoh peonies. Intersectional peonies are hybrid crosses between tree and herbaceous types. Herbaceous peonies die back in winter and regrow in the spring, while tree peonies lose their leaves in winter, but leave woody stems. Itoh peonies have the large flowers of a tree peony, but die back to the ground each year like herbaceous peonies.
Flower types include Anemone, Single, Lotus, Chrysanthemum, Rose, Golden Circle, Crown and Hundred Proliferate .
The peony is among the longest-used flowers in Oriental culture both for medicinal and decorative uses and is one of China’s national emblems.
