Althea Gibson Tennis Complex

During the early years of the 20th Century, the popularity of lawn tennis caused impromptu courts to be laid out in the Northern Division’s meadows. With the acquisition of land for the Extension Division, these courts found a permanent home in what is now the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex. This recently upgraded facility boasts some of the finest clay courts in the region. It is named for Althea Gibson, the famed African American tennis pro and Essex County resident.
