This is the third boathouse to be built on this site in over 100 years. Next to the building, the waters of Branch Brook Park Lake flow underground into what was the First River now contained in an eight-foot brick tunnel. From Kearny, you can still see the river splash into the Passaic below the Clay Street Bridge. This part of the lake is known as the South Bay. The extensive plantings around the lake edge recreate the Olmsted Firm’s original design. They stabilize the shoreline and provide food and habitat for wildlife. These trees, shrubs and perennials also create year-round beauty through their ever-changing colors and textures.
