493. Rabbit Ears (CR)

The Rabbit Ears landmark is a butte and a mountain peak that were quite visible when merchants crossed into New Mexican Territory from Oklahoma. From different locations on the Trail, travelers thought the landmark vaguely resembled a pair of rabbit ears. The Santa Fe Trail passed about seven miles north of this important landmark. According to one story, Rabbit Ears was named for an Indian chief who was killed in the area by Spanish Cavalry.

From here, travelers had approximately two hundred

miles to travel before reaching Santa Fe. Rabbit Ears is a prominent landmark on the Santa Fe Trail, so it is mentioned in this booklet. Because it is on private property, there are no activities for this site. Do you think it looks like rabbit's ears?
