  • 335. Rabbit Ears

An open prairie landscape with two small buttes in the distance resembling rabbit ears.
    Rabbit Ears

One of the first elevations seen by early traders entering New Mexico was Rabbit Ears, a mountain and butte resembling for some rabbit ears. Still visible from many miles around, it is designated Rabbit Ear Mountain. The trail passed to both the north and south of the landmark.

The Rabbit Ears Creek camp is on private land about six miles north of the town of Mount Dora, New Mexico. This was an excellent campground for Santa Fe Trail travelers, with spring water, grass, wood, and game for food. Many wagon trains reportedly rested at this site for a couple of days. It, no doubt, takes its name from the Rabbit Ears peak, visible also from the Clayton area.
