The largest harware store in early Granite Falls was John Ashe's Hardware, on the northwest corner of Granite Ave and Stanley St. You could buy everything from nails, hinges, and tools, to stoves, washing machines, and farm equipment. The west end of the building housed Ashe's Blacksmith Shop, as well. The hardware business changed hands, and ultimately moved south on Granite Ave., so the building served as the Spar Tree Tavern in its final incarnation, before being torn down to make way for a drive-in eatery that occupies the site today. The Granite Falls Museum houses a fine array of hardware items and blacksmith tools from these early businesses.
